BPD#9 – Design in Public Service

October 6, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm CEST

In our October edition, our meetup will be hosted at the beautiful campus of Merantix in Berlin Mitte, where we’ll hear a designer telling us how it feels to design products for public service, especially working for an employer as tough as the German Government. Nadine joined the DigitalService to help Germany step further into digitalization and will tell us about the challenges of designing for all citizens.

As usual, tickets are free and limited. Please make sure you are coming before getting one, and cancel if you can’t make it. If you get tickets 3 times without cancelling, you won’t be able to join our meetups for a year.

About the Speaker

Nadine Stammen is an investigative designer and researcher based in Berlin and joined DigitalService in 2021. Before that, she worked for several years in a web agency and non-profit organizations on topics such as citizen participation and open government. Together with other organizations like Transparency International, Stiftung Mercator and the City of Berlin, she worked on supporting social change with digital technologies.

About the Talk

Design and digital product skills are hard to find in the German public sector. No wonder Germany’s public services are often still paper-based and require citizens’ in-person attendance – unlike services from the private sector or other countries. Luckily, user-centred and iterative approaches are spreading and transforming how citizens interact with government and administration.

Nadine Stammen, designer at the Federal government’s DigitalService, will share how the relatively young but already 100+ people-strong unit works and what it does. Participants will learn about common approaches to public service design, challenges of working with the government, how these can be overcome by applying novel design methods, and why serving the public is deeply meaningful for designers. Nadine will give an insight into her most current work.

The presentation will last between 15 – 20 minutes, plus Q&A.
